Celebrate Dairy Month with Valley Wide
June is National Dairy Month, a time when the United States celebrates the vital contributions of the dairy industry. For over 85 years, this month-long recognition has shone a spotlight on the hardworking dairy farmers and families who ensure milk and dairy products reach our grocery store shelves every day.
National Dairy Month began in 1937 as National Milk Month to promote milk consumption and stabilize dairy demand during surplus production. The National Dairy Council soon expanded the focus, turning it into an annual tradition that celebrates the broader contributions of the dairy industry.
Celebrating Dairy and Its Benefits
This June offers a great opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of dedicated dairy farmers who work tirelessly to produce the milk and dairy products we enjoy. It’s also a chance to educate consumers about the multitude of nutritional advantages of dairy, including its role in diabetes prevention, heart health, bone health, sports recovery, and weight management.
While the “Got Milk?” campaign and the multitude of health benefits that milk offers are very well known, many people don’t know that milk is the only ‘food’ that someone can survive solely on. A single cup of whole milk provides a balanced combination of all three macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, making it a well-rounded choice for nourishment.
Furthermore, milk contains essential nutrients such as calcium and potassium, which are crucial for weight management and reducing the risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. Protein plays a vital role in building and repairing muscle tissue, while vitamin A promotes healthy skin.
The Pacific Northwest’s Dairy Tradition
Did you know Idaho produces about 15 billion pounds of milk every year? This impressive output secures Idaho’s position as the third-largest producer of milk and cheese in the nation. Idaho’s thriving dairy industry reflects its strong dedication and commitment to maintaining high quality standards.
Other states in the Pacific Northwest also contribute significantly to the region’s dairy industry. Washington features dairies in all 28 counties and is home to one of the oldest creameries in the nation. In Oregon, milk is the official state beverage, symbolizing the state’s deep appreciation for dairy products.
Ways to Celebrate
Starting off summer with dairy foods is a fantastic way to celebrate National Dairy Month this June. Consider visiting a local dairy farm to gain insights into the milk production process. For a hands-on experience, try making your own ice cream or cheese at home or simply incorporate more dairy into your daily meals, from yogurts to cheeses. Additionally, support local farmers by purchasing their products at farmers’ markets. This not only helps the local economy but also ensures you’re getting fresh, high-quality dairy products.
